The Mangalica woolly pig is one of the oldest, still pure breeds of European pigs. Its curly bristles have not only contributed to its name but protect this sturdy breed from heat and cold.
Our woolly pigs live on our estate outdoors in spacious enclosures all year round. They are usually incredibly inquisitive and very active creatures. Which means they also prefer looking for food themselves. We provide them with high-protein nutrition from the organic natural feed we grow ourselves.
Mangalicas are not the usual rearing pigs and they undergo slow, healthy growth. They are very stress-resistant and less susceptible to disease. All of which is beneficial to the quality of meat. The meat is somewhat darker compared with conventional breeds and very tender, juicy and fine-grained.
Mangalica woolly pigs are usually bred for bacon. A thick, brilliant white layer of bacon and attractive marbling are characteristic of them. What is remarkable are the low cholesterol values, which are clearly below those of other breeds, and the high proportion of omega-3 fatty acids. Despite its fat content, the meat is therefore well suited to a low-cholesterol and healthy diet.
